Mock Trial
Description: Mock Trial is an academic team of 13+ students that participate in a simulation of a criminal or civil legal case. School teams study a hypothetical legal case, conduct legal research and learn courtroom procedures and trial preparation techniques from their teacher sponsors and volunteer attorney coaches. Students portray each of the principals in the cast of courtroom characters – counsel (attorney), witnesses, court clerk, and bailiff – thus acquiring a working knowledge of our judicial system.
How to get involved: Contact Mrs. Nelson ([email protected]) for more information.
Meeting Time(s): Sundays 1-5 pmin the LMC, drop-in basis meetings on Wednesdays 2:30pm-4:00pm weekly. Preparation is required outside of meeting times.
Advisor: Ms. Sarah Hylas
Events: Members attend and/or participate in mock trials approximately 5 times from Sept-March and these competitions require an early dismissal from school and typically last 4-5 hours. Courtroom attire is required for these competitions. Additionally, the mock trial team attends the Harvard Mock Trial Workshop weekend and has been invited to compete in the Empire Mock Trial Competition in NYC. These two events require a weekend stay in Cambridge MA and New York City respectively.
Commitment/Expectations for attendance for meetings, practice(s), and/or event(s):
This club expects a high commitment from students (6+ hrs/week). Students must attend weekly weekend meetings - if absent they must let advisor know prior to the meeting. Sign-in is required at meetings. After two-three missed meetings, students may be removed from their role in trial. Once students commit to the team, it is imperative that they participate in the trial competition until the end of the season.
