Rotary Student of the Month for Science

1/2/2023

Congratulations to Anna Davis for being selected as the Rotary Student for the month of December in Science.  Anna was selected by the LOLHS Science department as the candidate for the Science Student of the Month as  "Anna Davis exemplifies excellence in her science classes on many levels. Teachers often refer to her as “the brightest student I have ever taught.”  Her impact on the school community and classroom go beyond her scholastic ability. She has a calm demeanor in the class, which fosters a positive learning environment. She is the go-to student within the classroom for students that need help; she is extremely generous with her time and expertise and happily help others both in problems solving activities and in the lab setting. She exemplifies leadership and excellence in Science, and we are proud to name her the Rotary Student of the Month."

Cultural, Linguistic, Interdisciplinary & Community Experience for Spanish AP Students and High School 101

By: Juanjo Vazquez-Caballero

Spanish Honor Society in collaboration with Reynolds’ Subaru did a project in September with a elementary school in New Britain (Fair Haven School).  Izzy Reynolds kept the connection with the elementary school teacher in order to continue collaborating with the students. She had the great idea of sending holiday cards.  I contacted Ms. Traver and her students in the class High School 101 designed attractive cards for 4th graders with winter and Christmas decorations.  Since we were learning and practicing the subjuntive, students wrote an interpersonal writing card using the subjuntive.  All the AP students wrote seven to nine beautiful wishes and desires for the students showing empathy, love and compassion.

Spanish NHS 22-23 Spanish/ Hybrid Tradition

It’s the Three Kings, or Reyes Magos (Melchior, Gaspar and Baltazar), who bring children their gifts in Spain, not Santa Claus (although he is becoming more popular now, too) on January 6, not Christmas Day. On the night of January 5, the Kings parade through the towns across the country with their entourage of helpers, animals and elaborate floats, throwing sweets out for the children. When the kids return home, they leave out their shoes for the Kings to fill with presents overnight.
At the National Spanish Honor Society, we created a new tradition in which students leave their shoes and if they were good members, they will receive candies (if they didn’t participate over the year, they will get coal). We are also aware of the Secret Santa so students brought a secret present for a friend. It was a nice way to finish the year.

"Finding someone to support your child’s mental health is just as important as finding a medical professional to help address physical well-being. The complexity of the children’s mental healthcare system and the process of navigating it can be frustrating to parents and guardians. Connecting to Care is committed to providing accurate and useful information about mental/behavioral healthcare for your child. While these lists may not be exhaustive of the services available in your area, they do provide the core services in each area."
