Bulletin Board Update:By Maggie Thuma The Spanish Honor Society has highlighted the country of Peru for this week's bulletin board. Peru is a country located in the North Western area of South America. The ECE Spanish classes have spent time learning about Peru due to its important history of Incan culture. The Incas ruled this area for decades until Spaniards colonized the area which caused a dent into the fulfillment of their culture. However the ancient Incan culture is a major draw to tourism, specifically to the ancient ruins named Machu Picchu. An important impact of Peruvian culture to the Americas is their unique cuisine. Two types of food that are very popular are Anticuchos cow hearts over yellow rice, and Lomo Saltado steak with grilled peppers over potatoes. A popular restaurant right in Connecticut, The Forbidden Llama located in Middletown Connecticut Kindness, Hope, and Spanish By Juanjo Vazquez
The students from the Spanish Honor Society created heartfelt cards for the residents of the retirement community, wishing them a New Year filled with health, joy, and peace. With respect and kindness, they expressed their hopes for a year of happiness and well-being, honoring the cultural richness of the Latino and Hispanic community. These cards reflect the students' deep appreciation for the elders' wisdom and experiences, and their sincere desire for them to enjoy a blessed and prosperous year ahead. They wrote the cards in Spanish because they are originally from Spanish speaking countries. Midterms can prove to be a challenging and stressful time for students. Each year, Student Council tries to provide a welcoming environment at the school for students to take some quiet time and "Study with a Buddy." This year, along with some popcorn, the snuggles from Kona made it all worth it!

WAY TO GO WILDCATS!
WAY TO GO RYAN!
In AP Spanish class, while studying Influences of Beauty and Art, students analyzed different sources and different points of view on whether graffiti is a form of art or vandalism. Students were asked for homework to think about their favorite Spanish word and to create graffiti. Students had to present in Spanish to the class in a circle the meaning of the graffiti and why they chose that word. It was interesting to find how the words were connected with past sensory experiences; for example, students described smells, sounds, feelings, sports, family, past events, etc.

Simon Karpinski is exceptionally intelligent and adapts swiftly and effectively to the demanding schedules he faces each year. Simon is a leader. He serves as Vice President of his class and has captained the Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track teams. A key member of our two-time state champion Mock Trial team, Simon also earns accolades while competing with the Math Team. He provides tutoring at the MAC center and volunteers at middle school track meets and charity races. Perhaps his most distinctive service, however, is the time he dedicates each summer to maintaining grave sites for the preservation and dignity of those who have passed. Simon is a young man of great kindness, hard work, and dedication. As a gifted student and individual, Simon consistently makes a positive impact on the world, just as he does every day in our school and in this community.
Olivia Kelly consistently strives to be her best, backed by an incredible work ethic. A strong student with even stronger grit and perseverance, she maintains a demanding schedule and ranks near the top of her class. As a three-sport athlete, her days often stretch from early morning to well into the evening, yet she always delivers. Her determination has earned her numerous accolades, including 2023 Shoreline Conference Player of the Year and Goalie of the Year. Olivia represents the Shoreline Conference on the state’s CIAC sportsmanship Committee. Even outside of her formal leadership roles, such as Soccer Captain, Student Leader, and National Honor Society member, Olivia is a go-to source of inspiration for her peers. She motivates and supports others with unwavering commitment to her responsibilities. Olivia never gives up; she consistently gives her best, pushing through challenges until she turns success into reality.
EXCELLENT WORK OLIVIA & SIMON!

- Frequent hand washing with soap and water. Wash hands for at least 15-20 seconds.
- Use of hand sanitizing gel when hand washing is not an option.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands.
- Stay home when you are sick. You may be contagious for several days once symptoms develop.
Administration and faculty recognize the need for staying at home when illness occurs. They support any measures to reduce the spread of flu and other communicable diseases.
Please notify your child’s school nurse and keep them home from school if they are exhibiting any of the following symptoms:
- Fever of 100 degrees or greater. Students should be fever-free without use of a fever-reducing medication for a minimum of 24-48 hours before returning to school.
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea. Students should remain at home until they have stopped vomiting for at least 24 hours and are able to tolerate fluids.
- Persistent/disruptive cough lasting for more than a few days or with a fever.
- Sore throat that is accompanied by fatigue, body aches, and fever.
- Skin rash that may be suggestive of a communicable disease.
Feel free to contact the nurses in the health office if you have any questions. If students need to be out of school for more than two days, it is advised for them to contact their teachers and communicate their situation. Teachers will work with them on make-up academic work plans.

Important Details About Midterms:
Collaboration project between Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica and Lyme Youth Service Bureau
This holiday season, the Spanish Honor Society at the high school, along with the help of Lyme's Youth Service Bureau, organized a toy drive this winter to support a local family in need. Members of the club worked together to collect items for a family in need, including clothes, toys, and games, ensuring they have a brighter Christmas. With donations from the students of the high school, the club was able to deliver all sorts of presents, spreading holiday cheer and helping others in busy times such as now. Not only did the Spanish Honor Society make this a more special season for one family, but they were also able to spread an important sense of community throughout our town. The community is very grateful to everyone involved, including LYSB, Señor Vazquez, and the members of the Spanish Honor Society. Thank you to all who helped!
Spanish National Honor Society 2024-25 Spanish & Hybrid Tradition
It’s the Three Kings, or Reyes Magos (Melchior, Gaspar and Baltazar), who bring children their gifts in Spain, not Santa Claus (although he is becoming more popular now, too) on January 6, not Christmas Day. On the night of January 5, the Kings parade through the towns across the country with their entourage of helpers, animals and elaborate floats, throwing sweets out for the children. When the kids return home, they leave out their shoes for the Kings to fill with presents overnight.
At the National Spanish Honor Society, in 2021-22 we created a new tradition in which students leave their shoes and if they were good members, they will receive candies (if they didn’t participate over the year, they will get coal). We are also aware of the Secret Santa so students brought a secret present for a friend. It was a nice way to finish the year and to keep this tradition.
Spanish NHS Serves Our Community
During the week previous to winter break, the Spanish Honors Society collected non-perishables to be used in the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme’s Saturday Food Pantry. The items were brought and given to the church at the end of the week for the upcoming
Saturday, the 21st. The Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries organization serves approximately 260 families in Lyme-Old Lyme every week. SSKP provides service in 11 towns: Essex, Chester, Clinton, Madison, Old Saybrook, East Lyme, Lyme, Old Lyme, Killingworth, Westbrook, and Deep River. We encourage anyone interested in helping the community to visit the Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries Website.
