![]() Thursday evening was the opening reception for the 39th Annual Region 18 Youth Art Show sponsored by the LYSB took place at Florence Griswold Museum. If you did not get a chance to attend, it is definitely worth a visit, and while you're there, you are welcome to view the exhibit at the museum too! It is open through June 8th. It is truly impressive to see the talent that comes from our students... from digital renderings, sculpture, ceramics, drawings and paintings. These photos do not do it justice! On Thursday at 11:20, with the weather not really cooperating as much as we would have liked, LOLHS put down the books and Wildcat Pride was strong. We were able to pivot a bit and provide some great fun hanging out with friends. Our incredible dining staff prepared a wonderful BBQ lunch enjoyed by all. LYSB transferred to the library with Officer Hackett and several wellness activities: bracelet making, coloring, stress ball making, and much more. We had ping-pong, karaoke, and the blow-up "ultimate" obstacle course inside. Outside, students enjoyed spike ball, ladder ball, corn hole, frisbee, whiffle ball, gaga pit and lots of ice cream! It turned out being a great day! A special thanks to the Ms Mercaldi and the Student Council for planning, pivoting and executing a wonderful afternoon and our dining staff for all their hard work (in the rain) and the delicious BBQ lunch. Way To Go Wildcats!![]() By Sarah Hylas: On Wednesday, May 21, junior Annabelle Coppola was honored with the Shoreline Social Studies recognition award. This award is chosen by the Social Studies faculty and presented to a junior who consistently “demonstrates a high degree of interest and enthusiasm for social studies and who possesses a high level of ability, critical thinking, and conceptual understanding of the subject.” In particular, Annabelle exhibits intellectual curiosity, paired with a grounded sense of justice and fairness. She is not afraid to share her “globalist perspective,” informed by her travels with her family and coupled with her observant demeanor. Most importantly, Annabelle’s kindness to others is unmatched, as well as her respect for teachers. In this day of age, she puts herself second to others, which is rare. She is a leader of both Model UN and the debate club, where she models civil discourse to cover controversial topics. She is a true ambassador of our school and a stand out choice for this award. In addition to receiving a citation from Connecticut State Representative Devin Carney, Annabelle was gifted a copy of the Pulitzer Prize winning book: Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom. The author, Dr. David Blight, was the honored speaker at the event. Professor Blight is one of the most distinguished historians of our time. He is the Sterling Professor of American History at Yale University and the long time director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale’s MacMillan Center for International Area Studies. Professor Blight spoke on the importance of public education, equating it to the most democratic institution in the United States. He read an excerpt from Frederick Douglass’s autobiography wherein Douglass watches the ships on the Chesapeake Bay and longs for his freedom. By painting this scene, Professor Blight encouraged students to find their your own freedom through opportunity and advancement.
