Collaboration, Empathy, Creativity, Technology, Love & Spanish

10/26/2024

By: Juanjo Vazquez-Caballero
Three groups of students collaborated on a special project: The Spanish Honor Society, students from High School 101 classes, and the LOLHS Unified Sports Club. The purpose of the project was to send love and support to children separated from their parents at the border. The students from High School 101 classes were responsible for creating the front of the greeting cards. They decorated them with cartoons and movie images that five to eight year olds would recognize. The members of the Spanish Honor Society and the members of Ms. Corah’s Unified Sports Club will write messages in Spanish on the inside of the cards as well as add more drawings and a piece of candy (Lifesavers). This is the fourth year that students have collaborated on this project to send comfort to others.

Chinese Classes Zooming with Beijing 101 Students

By John Wang
Mr. Wang’s Chinese Honor Society members are continuing their exchange program via zoom sessions with students from the International Program at Beijing 101 High School. Beijing 101 is a prestigious high school in China with a long and outstanding history and high achieving students. This is the second year we are continuing with our program, via zoom and pen pal, and our hope is to expand the exchange program by hosting each other’s students so that both groups will have a better understanding of how education works in each system. We are looking forward to having some exchange students from 101 join us briefly this winter, and going over to China to experience what 101 has to offer.

Are you interested in traveling to China in 2025?

The High School is organizing a China trip during February winter break, 2025.  It’s open to all high school students and guided by Aces International (Area Cooperative Educational Services, New Haven), which is the liaison between our high school and Beijing 101 High School. Unlike a typical tourist trip, there will be a lot of cultural exchanges and the opportunity for our students to stay with a host family and to experience the life of a high school student in China. For cost and other details, please contact Mr. Wang @ [email protected].

Academic Letter Ceremony '24

10/20/2024

On Thursday, October 17th, seniors celebrated the first of this year's "Senior Celebrations" with the Annual Academic Letter Ceremony. The letter is presented to all seniors who have achieved a cumulative Grade Point Average of 90 or better after six semesters of hard work. Mrs. Duhamel was the faculty speaker and Tabitha Colwell was the student speaker. Both gave heartfelt speeches congratulating the class for all of their hard work and accomplishments.
Mrs. Duhamel shared some inspirational quotes from The Jesse Owens Memorial Sculpture called Celebration for a Champion and connected them to the Class of 2025:

“First is  your determination to be able to reach your dream. Second, you have to have dedication. Then come self-discipline and sacrifice. And lastly is the attitude with which you assume your quest."
When I read that part of the quote, I thought of you—I really did. I thought to myself, “yes, these fabulous LOLHS scholars possess the positive attitude needed to succeed.” That attitude separates you from others—and that is so important!
After the morning ceremony,  students and parents enjoyed a breakfast reception in the commons.

Spanish NHS Updates:

Guest Speaker:
Mr. Alexandru / Science teacher and Global Citizen

By Ella Kiem
This past week, students in Spanish Honors Society welcomed a guest speaker with first-hand experience living in Romania. Mr. Alexandru, who spent the first years of his life in Romania, joined the class to share his unique insights on the country’s complex culture.
Mr. Alexandru has a diverse background, having worked as a medical translator for his grandma giving him an opportunity to continue using his Romanian language after moving to the United States. He discussed a wide range of topics including Romanian dishes and traditional clothing. The students of Spanish Honors Society were thrilled to have had the opportunity to listen to him speak about his experiences in English and in Rumanian!

Bulletin Board Update:

Picture
By Kate Walsh
The first bulletin board for Spanish Honors Society is up! The aim for all bulletin boards this year is to highlight the positive impacts that people from a variety of different Spanish-speaking countries have had on the United States. This board’s focus is on Puerto Rico, which is a territory of the United States and located in the Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico is popular for its beaches, rainforests, and colorful architecture. Puerto Rico’s culture is rich, and there are many Puerto Ricans that have influenced the US both culturally and politically. Sonia Sotomayor, for example, has been serving on the United States Supreme Court since 2009. Additionally, Ricky Martin is a singer widely recognized for bringing salsa into US mainstream music. There are many more individuals who have impacted the US, and you can find out about many of them, as well as Puerto Rico’s culture, on the bulletin board located in the Spanish wing!

Spanish ECE: Connections with American History

10/13/2024

By Juan Jose Vazquez-Caballero
In Spanish ECE: Cultural Topics, students just finished Unit 2, Franco’s Spain.  After watching, studying and analyzing the movie “Pan’s Labyrinth,” and other resources from the second unit, students practiced their presentational and technology skills by creating presetations comparing and contrasting the Spanish Civil War and the American Civil War, as well as Pearl Harbor and Guernica bombardments.
Here are a few projects to learn about the similarities and differences of those events that reshaped the direction and history of the USA and Spain.
It is in Spanish, but all the presentations have good visual information.

Rotary Student of the Month for English

10/12/2024

Picture
Congratulations to Skylar Kobelia for being selected by the English Department as the Rotary Student of the Month. On October 9th, Skylar was honored at the Rotary Student of the Month Breakfast along with honorees from Old Saybrook and Westbrook High Schools. Mrs . Baklik shared her remarks below describing some of the outstanding work Skylar has accomplished.
 By Mrs. Baklik:
Skylar is the kind of student who makes teaching so enjoyable. Her genuine curiosity and investment in learning is refreshing. Her contributions in class discussions encourage her classmates to raise their own expectations. And her writing stands out every time. I’d like to read a few lines from some pieces she wrote last year to show you what I mean.
  • In a counternarrative in which she retold the story of the evil queen from the Snow White fairy tale, Skylar described her character’s experience as she rode to meet her future. She wrote, “Somewhere tucked between the layers of my dress was the royal letter which had requested my presence. I imagined its blood red seal melting into my skin and burning me. Within the safety of my mind, I pictured the liquid wax coating my skin and turning [it] a shade of crimson red.”
  • And, in her literary criticism analysis research study of Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer, she wrote, “[E]xperiences of human life […] are reflected back to the environment [...] they inhabit. Kingsolver uses such universal human experiences to draw connections between humanity and nature […] us[ing] these principles to interweave human existence with the universe as a whole, reconciling humans with their natural origins and inspiring change in today's world.
  • Finally, in her credo narrative assignment, she wrote, “I was taught to listen through birds in the canopy and frogs in the pond. I was taught to listen through the quiet within me and the need to understand its emptiness. And because of this, I believe my meaning is to listen.”
I think these lines do more to show Skylar’s exceptionality as a high school writer than I could personally describe. They also demonstrate her ability to build connections, to empathize, and to listen to others’ voices. Skylar plans to study journalism and environmental science next year, and her ultimate goal is to “use [her] writing to give a voice to other people.”
