On Tuesday last week, we MET THE CHOIRS! It was yet just another show of amazing talent in our schools. The concert began with the 8th Grade Chorus with Mrs. Ventres Conducting. Then it continued with the Tenor/Bass Chorus, Soprano/ Alto Chorus, Select Singers and the grand finale with the Combined Choirs singing 'Ad Astra'. Well Done Wildcats!
Last weekend, Techno Ticks Team 236 hosted Bash @ the Beach. Robotics teams from all over descended on LOLHS to play their first competition of the year: CRESCENDO!

Three groups of students collaborated on a special project: The Spanish Honor Society, students from High School 101 classes, and the LOLHS Unified Sports Club. The purpose of the project was to send love and support to children separated from their parents at the border. The students from High School 101 classes were responsible for creating the front of the greeting cards. They decorated them with cartoons and movie images that five to eight year olds would recognize. The members of the Spanish Honor Society and the members of Ms. Corah’s Unified Sports Club will write messages in Spanish on the inside of the cards as well as add more drawings and a piece of candy (Lifesavers). This is the fourth year that students have collaborated on this project to send comfort to others. By John Wang
Mr. Wang’s Chinese Honor Society members are continuing their exchange program via zoom sessions with students from the International Program at Beijing 101 High School. Beijing 101 is a prestigious high school in China with a long and outstanding history and high achieving students. This is the second year we are continuing with our program, via zoom and pen pal, and our hope is to expand the exchange program by hosting each other’s students so that both groups will have a better understanding of how education works in each system. We are looking forward to having some exchange students from 101 join us briefly this winter, and going over to China to experience what 101 has to offer. The High School is organizing a China trip during February winter break, 2025. It’s open to all high school students and guided by Aces International (Area Cooperative Educational Services, New Haven), which is the liaison between our high school and Beijing 101 High School. Unlike a typical tourist trip, there will be a lot of cultural exchanges and the opportunity for our students to stay with a host family and to experience the life of a high school student in China. For cost and other details, please contact Mr. Wang @ [email protected].

The letter is presented to all seniors who have achieved a cumulative Grade Point Average of 90 or better after six semesters of hard work. Mrs. Duhamel was the faculty speaker and Tabitha Colwell was the student speaker. Both gave heartfelt speeches congratulating the class for all of their hard work and accomplishments. Mrs. Duhamel shared some inspirational quotes from The Jesse Owens Memorial Sculpture called Celebration for a Champion and connected them to the Class of 2025: “First is your determination to be able to reach your dream. Second, you have to have dedication. Then come self-discipline and sacrifice. And lastly is the attitude with which you assume your quest." When I read that part of the quote, I thought of you—I really did. I thought to myself, “yes, these fabulous LOLHS scholars possess the positive attitude needed to succeed.” That attitude separates you from others—and that is so important! After the morning ceremony, students and parents enjoyed a breakfast reception in the commons. On Wednesday evening the LOLHS Bands performed their first concert of the year. It was yet another amazing performance! Way To Go Wildcats!
In Mr. Lillie's Physics Class, students conducted car collisions. Students were relating momentum and impulse and trying to protect their egg from breaking.
Pete was unsuccessful on his first attempt but was able to make modifications and protect his egg on his second attempt.
Officer Stephen Hackett poses with Mrs. Duhamel's period 8 English 12 class Wednesday afternoon. Officer Hackett (class of 2007 and former student of Mrs. Duhamel) contributed real world vocabulary words to the class's Quarter One Vocabulary List; students have been encouraged to share their new knowledge of the words with Office Hackett when they see him on campus. He tells Mrs. Duhamel that he is impressed with the students' enthusiasm and interest!

Nice Job Wildcats!
Skylar is the kind of student who makes teaching so enjoyable. Her genuine curiosity and investment in learning is refreshing. Her contributions in class discussions encourage her classmates to raise their own expectations. And her writing stands out every time. I’d like to read a few lines from some pieces she wrote last year to show you what I mean.
- In a counternarrative in which she retold the story of the evil queen from the Snow White fairy tale, Skylar described her character’s experience as she rode to meet her future. She wrote, “Somewhere tucked between the layers of my dress was the royal letter which had requested my presence. I imagined its blood red seal melting into my skin and burning me. Within the safety of my mind, I pictured the liquid wax coating my skin and turning [it] a shade of crimson red.”
- And, in her literary criticism analysis research study of Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer, she wrote, “[E]xperiences of human life […] are reflected back to the environment [...] they inhabit. Kingsolver uses such universal human experiences to draw connections between humanity and nature […] us[ing] these principles to interweave human existence with the universe as a whole, reconciling humans with their natural origins and inspiring change in today's world.
- Finally, in her credo narrative assignment, she wrote, “I was taught to listen through birds in the canopy and frogs in the pond. I was taught to listen through the quiet within me and the need to understand its emptiness. And because of this, I believe my meaning is to listen.”
Thank you for all who came to help out the classes.
