Every year, the CIAC provides all participating Unified Schools the opportunity to nominate two individuals for the Mike Savage Teammate Award. You may be wondering - "What is the Mike Savage Teammate Award"? Let me explain..
In 2010, the CIAC established its own Spirit of Sport award named in honor of the former executive director, Mike Savage. This prestigious award seeks to recognize individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive spirit of sports and represent the core mission of education-based inclusion athletics. Individuals who receive this award demonstrate exemplary sportsmanship and citizenship, exceed the normal expectations in assisting others with the school or community, and have overcome adversity or challenging circumstances. Award recipients and their families (and all CT High School and Middle School Unified Sports Winners) gather at the Aqua Turf in Southington, CT in late April to celebrate this amazing acknowledgement with a fancy dinner, guest speakers, and fun giveaways. It is our pleasure to announce that the 2023-2024 Mike Savage Teammate Award Winners are Katie Zbierski and Eddie Fiske! The LOLHS Unified Sports team is beyond blessed to have the participation and support of Katie and Eddie. We are so proud of their dedication and the accomplishments that they have helped to achieve with this team. It has been such a joy watching the Unified Sports program grow and develop since its conception 6 years ago - all of which has been made possible by the many teammates we have and their commitment to the LOLHS Unified Sports Community. One more hugeeeee thank you to Katie and Eddie for being exemplar teammates in the LOLHS Unified Sports Program.

The boys crew team truly cleaned up this past week, both on the water and at the prom. We are thrilled to share the exciting news that the boys crew team had an outstanding performance at the recent Gunnery Regatta last Saturday! Not only did they excel in their races, but they also managed to get all cleaned up for the prom later that evening. It was a remarkable feat considering the regatta started at noon and took place over two hours away from Old Lyme. A big congratulations to the boys who secured 2nd place in their two varsity boats and clinched 1st place in their novice boat. They truly showcased their talent and dedication both on the water and on the dance floor at prom. The Race to Prom!Last Saturday, we participated in a regatta located in the far northwest part of Connecticut, nearly two hours away from LOLHS. This race was crucial for our qualifying and seeding for the Championships taking place later in May. Despite being aware of the date clash with the prom since the start of the season, I informed the crew during our initial meeting. After some initial resistance (which was understandable), there were no further complaints. The races unfolded exceptionally well, with all the girls' boats, as well as the novice boys, emerging victorious against four other formidable teams. The outcome exceeded expectations, leaving everyone pleasantly surprised!
Chase showcased his wrestling skills at the NHSCA High School National Championships held from April 4th to April 7th, 2024, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. This prestigious event is a platform for high school wrestlers in the US to vie for national recognition. Representing Old Lyme and donning his Wildcat singlet, Chase competed in the Freshman 160 lbs. Division. He commenced his journey in the round of 64 and triumphed in his first 3 matches, advancing to the quarter-finals. Despite taking an early lead with a takedown, Chase narrowly lost by a single point to the 4th place finisher. Undeterred, he rebounded with a victory in the subsequent match, securing a coveted spot on the podium. Chase's remarkable performance culminated in an 8th place finish at 160 lbs., earning him the esteemed title of All American. Additional Accomplishments in 2024:
In an impressive display of skill and determination, Owen Shapiro, a member of the Mount Snow freestyle mogul team, showcased his exceptional abilities at the Freestyle Mogul Skiing East Coast Junior Championships held at Killington on March 16. After earning his well-deserved spot at the championships through his outstanding performances throughout the season, Owen fearlessly took to the slopes to compete against the best in his age group. Owen ended up ranking ninth in his age group and 26 overall in the mogul competition, which was super exciting. This unforgettable moment marks not only a personal triumph for Owen but also a testament to the hard work and passion he has poured into his craft. Congratulations to Owen for his remarkable performance and excellence on the slopes. On Thursday, March 7th, our Boys Basketball team kicked off their Division V State Tournament campaign with high hopes as the #3 Seed. After a first-round bye, they faced off against #14 Seed Gasso Tech Tech and emerged victorious with a solid 53-44 win at home. The excitement continued on March 11, 2024, when Lyme-Old Lyme took on #6 Seed Somers in a thrilling match on home turf. The team secured a spot in the semifinals with a 52-47 triumph. With tensions running high, the Wildcats battled it out in the semifinals on Wednesday, March 13, at the packed Xavier gym. In a nail-biting finish, they clinched a close 43-40 victory, propelling them to the Finals. The ultimate showdown took place at Mohegan Sun on Sunday, March 17, 2024. Our Boys Basketball team made Lyme-Old Lyme proud by overpowering Coventry with an impressive 55-42 win in an electrifying game. Congratulations to the boys and their coaches on a well-deserved victory! Go Wildcat! We also had an amazing performance by the Lyme-Old Lyme Select Singers, directed by Choir Teacher, Kristine Pekar, who sang the national anthem at the start of the game at Mohegan Sun. Finally, congratulations to Leland Hine on being selected as the Most Outstanding Players of the game. Great job! We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all families for their continued support and partnership. Thank you for being part of our school community! Thanks to Warner Swain for Capturing the event! All photos can be found here. |
