Will Coppola spent the spring semester of his junior year in our nation's capitol working as a Page for the United States Senate. He was sponsored by Senator Murphy as one of the 27 Pages accepted into this very prestigious position. As described by Will, the position of a Page provide young people with a view into the life and work of our Congress. The job included, after 2 hours of school in the morning, assisting with small jobs like setting up podiums for speeches or chambers for sessions, counting votes, or working on 'subway duty' where they would count and check times of senators arriving via the underground subway to the capitol building. Will was present for the 118th Official Senate Portrait and for the State of the Union. He described it as being an emotional moment and like being at "the Oscars of Politics" with all the cameras and flashes of the paparazzi. As Will is beginning his senior year at LOLHS, he has his sights on universities in DC with close access to DC in order to continue working in this environment. He would like to possibly join the Foreign Service, following in his mother's footsteps. I am confident that wherever he is destined, he will be a true success! Register here Kona stopped by for a visit to period 7 AP US History students today for a quick study break. He was very happy to see everyone! The Class of 2024 started this year with a special event. The Senior Sunrise was an event hosted and created by student Mila Lopes, who provided Donuts for everyone. It occurred on the first day of school before classes started on the Wildcat hill. Students were able to gather and have a moment before the beginning of their Senior year to talk and embrace this special moment. Mr. Luke Alexandru joins our Science Department teaching Chemistry and Anatomy & Physiology and has been enjoying getting to know the students and staff here. He was excited to assemble three skeletons that stand proudly in his classroom. When asked his first impressions of LOLHS he thought of "High School Musical" as we have the same mascot. He loves cooking, anime and anatomy puns! Ms. Chelsea Grenier is also a new member of our Science Department teaching Biology, AP and ECE Biology. While she is a native of Connecticut, after attending college Texas A&M, she settled in Texas to pursue her teaching career there for several years. She has moved back home to CT and has decided to continue teaching in her home state. She excited to be here and when asked her first impressions of LOLHS, she noted that "everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. And that the students are so polite! " Christie Williams-Kahn joins our School Counseling Department this year. She comes to us from Clinton where she worked as a school counselor at Morgan HS for 15 years. When asked what her first impressions of LOLHS are, she was impressed with our incredibly friendly and welcoming environment and has already noticed the high expectations we have of our students and staff. She too is excited to be here and partner with families and students as they navigate their high school career. WELCOME TO THE WILDCAT TEAM!As we launch this new school year, our Lymes Youth Service Bureau reminds parents and families to consider multiple aspects of going back to school such as our students' mental health, the academic expectations of LOLHS, navigating social relationships and social media, and much more. Balancing all these aspects of high school life can be challenging for many. Remember that LYSB is a great place for some tools and resources.
On Thursday during both lunches, the Student Advisory Council welcomed students who are new to LOLHS with a pizza lunch. It is our first of several lunches that SAC will sponsor this quarter to help students acclimate to LOLHS providing opportunities to meet other students and learn about our school and our community.
