Picture
The World Language Department is pleased to announce that senior Willa Hoerauf has been selected as its Rotary Scholar of the Month. Willa has been an outstanding Spanish student throughout her four years at LOLHS. During that time, Willa has been a proven leader both in and out of the classroom. She is currently enrolled in the Spanish AP/UConn ECE course, where she achieves at the highest levels. During her junior year, she participated in a two-week immersion program in Spain, where she demonstrated a remarkable ability to use her language skills in a real-world context. Her passion for global issues has led her to be active in both the Spanish National Honor Society and Amnesty International, where she is an officer. Willa will be honored at an April 19th Rotary meeting at Saybrook Point Inn. Stay tuned for more photos.

Congratulations, Willa, for being a
model of global citizenship!

A Note From Central Office: Free Lunch Legislation

2/26/2023

To:  Parents and Guardians of Lyme-Old Lyme Students
From:  Holly McCalla, Business Manager
Date:  February 16, 2023
RE:  Free lunch legislation

This week, Governor Lamont signed legislation allocating an additional $60 Million toward free meals for Connecticut’s school children.  If you recall, breakfast and lunch were free at the beginning of this year, but funding was exhausted in early December.
At this time, schools are awaiting the guidelines from the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) as to how this additional funding is to be appropriately utilized.  Once this guidance is issued, the district will implement the program and communication will be sent to all families.  What we do know, however, is that there will not be retroactive payment of past due balances on lunch accounts; therefore, please ensure your child has a positive or $0 balance on his/her lunch account at all times.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Spanish AP Students Engaged in  Real Conversations

2/25/2023

By  Sr. Vázquez: Spanish AP 2023 - Presente del Subjuntivo - Real Conversations
Students have been studying and using present subjunctive in different academic scenarios and AP practices.  In order to make the practice and usage more memorable, we tried to use it in more spontaneous and authentic contexts outside of the school setting.
Students had to create an advertisement requesting some service (like in the old times). Some examples were advertisements seeking roommates, landscapers, piano instructors, dog-walkers, and personal trainers.  In the advertisement, students had to write 10 sentences using the subjunctive.
We displayed all of the posters in the classroom, and students had to take a piece of paper with the name and number of the person and call him/her requesting information about the responsibilities.  The task had all of the components of an interpersonal speaking communication but with more room for improvisation.

Former LOLHS Graduate Speaks to Entrepreneurship Class

2/19/2023

Kristin Davis, former student and graduate of LOLHS who is now co-owner (with Dan Coffee) and co-creator of Old Lyme based D. Coffee Services, LLC, spoke to the Business Department's Entrepreneurship class.  Kristin told them about her career moves since leaving LOL and how and why she went from working for others to starting a business.  Kristin explained the process a new business goes through from getting legal licenses and permits to buying equipment to getting the word out.  She said that her experience in the world of work as well as her business classes here gave her the impetus to create a startup.  D. Coffee Services, LLC opened in 2022 as a new business serving our community and doing, for now, mostly outside work anywhere from dump runs to landscaping.  They hope to expand their offerings (hence, the name Services) in the future. Kristin said that she loves being her own boss and the opportunity this business affords for her to work outside.

Influential Hispanic Female Musicians

Picture
By Callie Bass, Livie Bass, Lyla Powers, and Alexis Fenton
For this month’s Spanish Honor Society board, we wrote about influential Latina women artists. We decided to highlight four artists, Rosalía Tobello, Jennifer Lopez, Selena Quintanilla, and Gloria Estefan. Rosalía is a Spanish singer and songwriter, born in Barcelona, who became the first woman to win the Latin Granny Awards twice. Jennifer Lopez is an American actor and musician, who has won many awards including Favorite Latin Artist and Best Actress Feature Film in Hustlers. Selena is called the “Queen of Tejano music”, and she was the first female Tejano artist to win a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album. Finally, Gloria was born in Havanah, Cuba and she has won three Grammy Awards for her music. These are only a few of the many accomplished latina musicians.

Cultural Experience for the  Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica

2/12/2023

The Lyme-Old Lyme chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society recently took a trip to a progressive Mexican Restaurant in Niantic, called La Llorona, where they were able to enjoy a lovely dinner together. We had 4 tables and each table had a different waiter.  During a conversation with the manager, I requested that the staff only speak Spanish to Lyme Old Lyme students.
Even though waiters had a different accent, all students were able to talk, communicate, and order with staff at the restaurant.  The manager and the restaurant staff were able to accommodate a very noisy group of 29 students and one adult. The behavior and the excitement  were excellent (based on feedback from nearby tables).  Students enjoyed the Mexican cuisine in a very authentic environment. I talked with a science teacher from East Lyme High School and she couldn’t believe how fluent our student were.
We will try to go again next year; the practice and cultural value of the experience was well worth it.

SAC Students Help with 8th Grade Transition

2/12/2023

On Friday, members of the Student Advisory Council (SAC) joined myself and Mrs. Molnar during our second session of "High School Here We Come!". SAC students answered various questions based on the Jeopardy game that we played with the eighth grade students. Students were able to gain a better understanding of various topics related to high school such as time management, homework expectations, study halls, elective courses, attendance, credits,  dances, clubs and sports, etc. All this was to prepare them for February 16th when they will meet the HS Counselors and  recieve their course selection sheets and later that night ... join us at the 8th Grade Student/Parent Night at 6:30 at LOLHS.

Telling the Future in Spanish IV Classes

2/12/2023

Students have been studying the impact of technology and science in the USA and in the Spanish-speaking world.  One of the tools for students to be able to communicate ideas about this futuristic thinking is the different kinds of future in Spanish. After a week of conjugating, answering questions and writing in the journal, it was time for students to practice the future in some real contexts such as the following: reading the horoscope from a Spanish newspaper, practicing with a fortune teller made of paper, and pretending to read the future with a ball as a professional fortune teller.  Students used euros to pay the service. Students talked in Spanish throughout the class. Who said that it wasn’t possible to speak in Spanish for 30 minutes ?
