By Laura Nelson, Mock Trial Advisor LOLHS Mock Trial Team returned last week from their exciting trip to the National Competition. We had a fantastic time! We went 1-3 in our trials, which I would argue should have been 2-2 (we think we beat Alabama!) We went against some incredibly prepared teams and in speaking with other coaches, some of those teams had been practicing 3 hours a night/5 days a week for the past 6 weeks! Our team was phenomenal, as usual, but given how much our kids have going on, the results were not surprising! We really tried to keep the kids focused on having a great time, meeting other kids and enjoying the experience and we definitely accomplished that! I've said it before and I will say it again - these kids are incredible and such wonderful ambassadors for our school. I was so proud of how they conducted themselves, their maturity and their sportsmanship. They were competitors, but they were also kind, especially when we went against a much less skilled team. It was an experience I will never forget and I am so thankful to have been able to share this season with Delaney, especially, but all of the kids. They are a talented bunch and have great things ahead of them. WAY TO GO WILDCATS!

The Connecticut Bar Association (CBA) has named Emmerson Kaye as a recipient of the Ralph J. Monaco Memorial Civics Education Award. The Committee selected Emmerson from numerous nominations they received statewide recognizing her strong commitment to create positive change in her community and the world beyond. CBA honored Emmerson as part of Law Day in Hartford which included in-depth discussions concerning voting rights at the appellate court and the exploration of important legal issues at the state capitol. Some ECE Chinese students were zooming with their pen pals from Beijing 101 High School, a prestigious school in Beijing, China that is now our sister school. Since the start of the exchange programs before Covid-time, we have had four exchange students from China in our high school. Recently, we have received some teachers and administrators from Beijing 101, who seemed to be very impressed with our school. Their teachers are very interested in the exchange of ideas and teaching resources with our teachers, and Chinese classes are the first to jump on this opportunity to have students zoom and write emails to each other. This is the second time of student zoom meeting, and a smaller group, but more will follow. Students exchanged ideas about academics and their personal lives, as well as overseas studies. In recognition of his excellence service, the board of directors of the Connecticut Association of Schools, awarded Mr. Wygonik a Letter of Commendation in early May. Mr. Wygonik has served the Connecticut Association of Schools since 2008 in the following capacities: • CIAC Boys Lacrosse Committee: 2008-2019 • CIAC Board of Control: 2019-present • CIAC Eligibility Committee: 2019-present; Chair: 2021-present • Eligibility Committee Review Board: 2021-present "Your history with the association dates back to 2008 when, as a young but rising star in Connecticut’s educational community, you joined the CIAC Boys Lacrosse Committee. Fast forward three years to 2011. Having just completed your inaugural year as principal of Lyme-Old Lyme High School, you were selected as the William Cieslukowski Outstanding First Year Principal. Since that time, you have generously contributed your skills and expertise to a number of committees and boards, and have emerged as one of the CIAC’s most prominent leaders. Your appointment as chair of the Eligibility Committee – which is arguably the CIAC’s most important and certainly its most challenging committee – speaks to the high esteem in which you are held by our peers. A member of the CIAC Board of Control since 2019, your experience as a high school coach has provided you with a broader perspective and more intimate understanding of the needs of the young people whose interests the CIAC was established to protect. It has been said of you that “you can’t take the coach out of the principal.” The truth of this statement has been shown time and again as you continue to inform decisions and elevate discussions with your knowledge of coaching philosophies and insistence on the highest standards of sportsmanship and ethical conduct. As a five-year member and three-year chair of the CIAC Eligibility Committee, you consistently bring reason, calm judgment, courage and a knowledge of precedent to bear upon the complex cases that come before the committee. And you always remain grounded in the overarching importance of athletics as just one facet within the broader spectrum of our students' education. As both a CIAC member and a building principal, you have been a true champion of high school athletics; and your individual efforts and actions have helped to promulgate the important role that sports play in the development of our youth." Well Done Mr. Wygonik!Thursday evening, once again the Spring Chorus Concert did not disappoint. After performances from each ensemble, the Tenor/ Bass Chorus, Soprano/ Alto Chorus and the Select Singers joined forces to perform a choral selection from the movie, Les Miserables. They were among 16 children of Electric Boat employees competitively chosen to win their respective awards for 2024. Way To Go Wildcats!Seniors Receive the CABE Student Leadership Award:CONGRATULATIONS TO Griffin McGlinchey and Sydney Goulding who were honored at Wednesday evening's BOE meeting. They received the CABE Student Leadership Award. The Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) Student Leadership Awards Program is designed to honor Connecticut High School and Middle School students who exhibit exemplary leadership skills. Griffin McGlinchey has written his own unique path into blossoming as a leader in our school. He leans on his unwavering morals and values to guide everything he does. Griffin serves as a middle mentor school and volunteers his time in a tennis program designed for students with special needs. Academically, Griffin maintains an impressive GPA while taking our most challenging courses. This Sunday he will be honored by the CIAC as Lyme-Old Lyme’s Scholar Athlete of the Year. He has served as captain of our tennis team and most recently for our co-op hockey team that played in the state championship game. Did I mention that he is also president of the senior class? Griffin is highly respected by his peers and our faculty who selected him as the Wildcat Award recipient for the student who most exemplifies our Core Values of integrity, accountability, perseverance, and respect. A scholar, an athlete a musician, a leader, and most of all a gentleman in every sense of the word. And also a deserving recipient of the CABE Leadership Award. Sydney Goulding is a natural, in every sense of the word. Academically, she ranks amongst the highest achievers in her class. Her schedule includes no shortage of advanced placement and early college experience coursework. Athletically, Sydney has set herself apart as a top tier athlete, recognized at the first team all-conference and all-state level for both soccer and lacrosse, while serving as a team captain for both sports. Her coaches would tell you that while her athletic talents are many, it is her leadership, perseverance and grit that truly set her apart. In her ‘free’ time, she is a dedicated equestrian. Her combined talent and passion for horseback riding have led her to pursue a future in equestrianism and veterinary science. Sydney fills all of these roles naturally while managing to be one of the brightest, kindest and most hardworking young adults to pass through our school. Admired by all, Sydney is a rarity and a standout amongst a student body that prides itself on standing out. We are so fortunate to have Sydney represent Lyme-Old Lyme High School, and to present her with the CABE Leadership Award. CONGRATULATIONS GRIFFIN AND SYDNEY!LOLHS Wrestlers Recognized for AchievementsChase Catalano and Hoshena Gemme were both recognized for the outstanding achievements in Wrestling over this past year.
