Every 90 seconds, someone is injured in a drunk driving crash, and every 53 minutes someone dies in a drunk driving crash, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Paramedics and educators around the country are intent on making these statistics real for teens by staging mock drunk driving crashes at high schools across the country in the hopes of having students think before making poor choices. On Friday, April 28, LOLHS students participated in a Mock Crash event. Old Lyme EMTs, Firemen/women, Police, and Fulton Funeral Home all participated volunteering their time to help make this event as realistic and meaningful as humanly possible. Following the crash, we convened in the auditorium where students listened to a 'mock' Eulogy for the student who fictitiously died in the crash. Paramedics from Backus Hospital as well as a representative from MADD addressed the students describing their experiences. Thank you to LYSB for sponsoring this event - specifically Missy Garvin for organizing and coordinating all parties. It was quite a compelling event. Comments are closed.
