The LOLHS Science Bowl team of Ryan McTigue, Rachael Larson, Nikolai Stephens-Zumbaum and Ted Wayland competed at the Department of Energy Northeast Regional Science Bowl competition. Placed in Division E in the morning, they beat Greenwich HS B, Kingswood-Oxford HS, New Canaan HS, Waterford HS A, and Rocky Hill HS B. Based on their wins and number of points scored, the team was ranked #7 of the 35 teams in the South competition and was the smallest public school in the competition. The team entered the afternoon’s double elimination tournament against 10th ranked E. O. Smith HS B with a loss. Although answering almost the same number of tossups, the team did not answer any bonus questions and as bonus questions are worth 10 and tossups only 4, the 90-28 loss sounds a lot more lopsided that it was. Shunted into the lower bracket, LOLHS again faced New Canaan. This time New Canaan played much better but couldn’t match the Wildcats, still falling short 46-42. Advancing in the lower bracket LOLHS faced a rematch against EO Smith B. This time, although LOL led at the half, EO Smith resurged in the second half to win 56-26. Overall the Wildcats finished 6-2 on the day and 7th in a field of 35. Big individual scorer for the day was Ryan with 216 points, Rachael with 20 and followed by Nikolai with 12. All four contributed to the numerous bonus questions answered and learned some humility and a lot of science. Comments are closed.
