Mya Johnson, who led Old Lyme to its fourth consecutive CIAC Class S girls' soccer championship in 2018, was named the Hank O'Donnell Female Athlete of the Year by the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance on Monday. Johnson will be honored at the 78th Gold Key Dinner on Sunday, April 28, at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington. The Bill Lee Male Athlete of the Year is Wesleyan University lacrosse player Harry Stanton of New Canaan, a three-time All-American who led Wesleyan to its first national title in 2018. Johnson, who will attend Connecticut College this fall, scored Old Lyme's final five goals of this state tournament, a hat trick in the Wildcats' 3-1 semifinal win over East Hampton and then both goals to wipe out a 1-0 deficit and rally Old Lyme to a 2-1 win over Immaculate in the finals. Her first goal in the final was the 100th of her career. Johnson and Stanton will be honored along with this year's Gold Key recipients who include St. Thomas More men's basketball coach Jere Quinn and former UConn men's basketball great Chris Smith.
