AP Students Discuss Influences of Beauty and ArtSpanish ECE - Movida Madrileña
By: Juanjo Vazquez- Caballero
During our last unit, students learned about Spain after the death of Francisco Franco. He was a dictator for almost 40 years. He closed Spain for any cultural, political or social influence from the outside world. Spain was frozen in the past. Spain was a fossil until 1975. In 1977, Spain had democratic elections and became a democracy, but Spanish people, especially young ones, were thirsty for more than just democracy; they wanted self- expression, an identity, experimentation, etc. In Madrid, around 1980, a counterculture called the Movida Madrilena movement started to grow rapidly. It expanded all around Spain, giving the young people an opportunity to express themselves. The movement reshaped Spain and its views. Students did a great project comparing and contrasting the Movida Madrilena and the Hippie Movement. The Environmental Community Organization of Stewards (ECOS) held a work party on Sunday at Watch Rock /Elizabeth P. Karter Preserve. They beat the rain, but just barely! Edie Twining and Mary Devins from OLLT were present to give instructions on the project, talk about the land, some of the trees we were cleaning up after, and the indigenous people's use of the land as a summer fishing camp. They then lead us on a brief hike/walk that was cut short by rain. Hot cocoa and donuts were enjoyed at the end. On Friday, December 8th, Student Council hosted PJ Day for the Kids. Students wore pajamas in honor of the brave kids fighting cancer at Connecticut Children's Hospital. Since 2011, hundreds of thousands of children in Connecticut and Massachusetts have worn their PJs to school, and simultaneously, have raised more than $1,400,000 in support of kids at Connecticut Children's. LOLHS was able to raise $448.65 and donated it to the Connecticut Children's Hospital. We want to thank everyone that participated in this event and donated. We look forward to continuing this fundraiser each year at LOLHS.
Congratulations to our Mock Trial team! They competed last week and this week winning both trials and advancing to States! The students were amazing - demonstrating poise, polish and true team spirit. WAY TO GO WILDCATSThe Chinese Honor Society held a fundraiser by showing the movie Mulan Friday night. Members organized the event and provided snacks and drinks for a great Friday gathering. We had over thirty students who came to enjoy the movie, relax, and learn about the Chinese culture and history. Students were very helpful in setting up the furniture and clean up after the event. Money raised will go to a worthy cause.
On Wednesday, Dr. Jungkeit and Professor Booker joined the students of the African American Black and Puerto Rican Latino Studies class for a compelling presentation. Dr. Jungkeit shared local history giving students a geographical perspective and the historical background of our very own Lyme Street and Old Lyme. While sharing the dark history that took place in our town, he also shared some very important people of conscience who were able to stand up for what was right and made a difference. Professor Booker shared a more global perspective including the fact that out of 169 towns in Connecticut there are only 16 towns of color - Connecticut being the fifth most segregated state in the US. The presenters left students thinking about the importance of becoming voices of conscience, to notice, keep learning, and to speak up against something that is not just. Professor Booker encouraged students to never stop being truth-seekers, leaving them with the words of Jimi Hendrix "knowledge speaks, wisdom listens."

For our most recent Spanish Honor Society bulletin board, we discussed and explored highly successful Spanish professional athletes. Our first athlete that was spotlighted was Rafael Nadal, a professional tennis player. In his career, he has won fourteen French Open championships in his career, as well as being the first male player to win 22 “Grand Slam” championship titles in singles. Currently, he has suffered an injury, prohibiting him from playing tennis, but hopes to continue on to win more championships. Our next athlete is Blanca Fernández Ochoa, who was an Olympic alpine skier. Between 1985 to 1991, she won four World Cups, but unfortunately in 2019, she passed away. Another athlete we discussed was Pau Gasol, a basketball player. In his early years, his team won the ACB League championship twice and won Spain’s “Copa del Rey de Baloncesto'' once. In 2017, he became the highest scorer of all time in a single year. Pau announced his retirement in 2021 and is currently serving an eight year term on the International Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission. Miguel Indurain was another athlete that was highlighted on the board. He won the “Tour de France” five times consecutively, the Olympics, and the World Championship twice. Currently, he is retired and stated that he enjoys spending time with his family. Another name on the board was Pablo Gavira, or Gavi. He has received the “Golden Boy” Award from the French Soccer Club and the “Kopa Trophy”, both in 2022. He quickly earned a spot as the starting eleven on the field as center midfield, despite his very young age of nineteen years, for both FC Barcelona and the Spanish National Team, but as of recently, Gavi has been seen on the sidelines due to an ACL tear. However, his surgery was a success and his future is bright for many more years to come. The last athlete that we covered on the board was Mireia Belmonte Garcia. She is a Spanish Olympic, world, and European champion swimmer. She is the world record holder in the short course 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley and was the first Spanish woman to win a gold medal in swimming at the Olympics. She is currently still swimming today. To learn more about each of these athletes with more detail, stop by the Spanish National Honor Society bulletin board by the Spanish rooms. Former LOLHS Accounting student, Aidan Ward, spoke to Accounting classes to tell them about his experiences as a college accounting major. Although currently a Sophomore, he gave helpful information about what it was like his Freshman year including not being able to take many courses in his major. He told the students that the Career Center is invaluable to work with in college; he mentioned that LinkedIn and joining clubs were important for an accounting major to network. In addition to his college experiences, Aidan talked about interning with Mahoney Sabol & Company and being able to use his QuickBooks Certification (which he earned while in high school accounting). He told students that an internship was key to more networking and learning about every aspect of a business from clerical work to actual accounting; he said the important thing you gain from an internship is watching and learning about a future career and how an accounting firm works. His closing remarks to students pursuing a career in accounting were that students should be able to use Microsoft Excel, go to the professors' office hours, to get involved with campus life, to go to events sponsored by the business school, and to meet accounting firms. Before leaving, he answered student questions. Students remarked that they were very impressed with his presentation and that hearing for a current college student helped a lot.
On Wednesday during our Advisory period, classes gathered in various locations in the school to enjoy each other and bond a bit. Grade 9 students met in the library for some holiday cheer and watch some holiday cartoons. Grade 10 met in the gym to play some cider and volleyball, Grade 11 met in the auditorium to watch Prep and Landing'. And Grade 12 after getting measured for Caps and Gowns, hung in the commons and played spikeball, ping pong or just be with friends! LOLHS students who work with Mrs. Zing, had a farewell party for her this week as this was her last week before she embarks on her next chapter of life... retirement! HAPPY RETIREMENT MRS. ZING!!!
