Hola from Willa Hoerauf, Grace Colwell and Izzy Reynolds from Spanish Honors Society! National Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15th to October 15th this year. This month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Hispanic or Latin American countries. These next few days, we will be informing you about important Hispanic-American and Latin-American people from different backgrounds who have impacted our current American society. To start off; What is the difference between Hispanic and Latinx?
Hispanic refers to people from spanish-speaking countries or people with spanish-speaking descendants. This can include people from Spain and certain South American countries. Latinx, however, specifically focuses on people from or descending from spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. This does not include Spain and Portugal, because they are in Europe. There’s a distinction because many people believe that the term Hispanic reasserts a relationship between conquered South American countries and their conquerors, Spain and Portugal.
