Bulletin Board UpdateBy Eric Dagher For our Spanish Honors Society board, we decided to clear up the confusion that people may have between someone who is Hispanic and someone who is Latino or Latina. Part of our goal as Global Citizens in Spanish Honors Society is to inform others about both the beauty and intricacies in different Spanish cultures so that everyone can be more understanding of each other. We stated on the board that Hispanic refers to a person with ancestry from a country whose primary language is Spanish, while Latino and its variations refers to someone with origins from anywhere in Latin America (Mexico, South and Central America) and the Caribbean. We made sure to clear up this confusion through a venn-diagram, which includes each country of origin that would fit Latino, Hispanic, or both. It is understandable that people mix up the two groups because there is a lot of overlap. At the same time, it is important to know the difference since it demonstrates respect to people who have these different cultural backgrounds. Finally, our group highlighted Peru, which can be considered both Latino and Hispanic since Peru is both Spanish speaking and located in Latin America. Peru has a mix of indigenous and Spanish influences in its culture. Traditional music, dance, and festivals are key, and Peruvian cuisine is famous for its unique flavors. Machu Picchu, the Andes Mountains, and the Amazon Rainforest are all crucial parts of Peru with a strong connection to nature. By Sr. Vazquez Anna Mcadams, one of the SNHS members, was able to connect the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica with a local Instructor, Maryna from Salsa Wave Dance Studio. As a group, we decided to learn Bachata, a social dance from the Dominican Republic which is now danced all over the world, even in Ukraine where Maryna is from. We had a great time in the gymnasium. Many athletes who were passing by stopped to watch and realized how gifted and talented all of their friends are. Hopefully Maryna can visit our school again and perhaps work with an even bigger group of students. It was a blast! Comments are closed.
