Spanish AP Students Engage in Real ConversationsBy Sr. Vázquez Students have been studying and using present subjunctive in different academic scenarios and AP practices. In order to make the practice and usage more memorable, we tried to use it in more spontaneous and authentic contexts outside of the school setting. Students had to create an advertisement requesting some service (like in the old times). Some examples were advertisements seeking roommates, landscapers, piano instructors, dog-walkers, and personal trainers. In the advertisement, students had to write 10 sentences using the subjunctive. We displayed all of the posters in the classroom, and students had to take a piece of paper with the name and number of the person and call him/her requesting information about the responsibilities. The task had all of the components of an interpersonal speaking communication but with more room for improvisation. Spanish NHS' February Guest Speaker: Brynn McGlinchey By Griffin McGlinchey and Sr. Vazquez This past Wednesday, Spanish Honor Society hosted LOLHS graduate Brynn McGlinchey who recently spent a semester in Granada, Spain. Brynn graduated from LOLHS in 2019 and recently graduated from Brown University with a degree in public health. Brynn shared with us her experience as a student studying abroad and some information about the city of Granada, which is located in the south of Spain and known for its diverse culture and architecture which includes the Alhambra, an ancient palace recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Center. She also talked about the importance of learning and exploring new cultures and the different elements of interacting with a new community. One of her more meaningful experiences was volunteering at a nursing home and connecting with older residents of Granada. She encouraged students to study abroad if they get a chance. We were very happy to have Brynn as a guest speaker and wish her the best of luck in the future! Comments are closed.
