​The LOLHS Unified Sports Team partnered up with the Westbrook High School Unified Team for a field trip to the Mystic Aquarium this last Thursday. The rain did not keep them from the fun - beluga whales, penguins, sharks, sting rays, cichlids, and sea turtles were just a few of the animals that the athletes were able to see and touch! Rhyleigh was an easy choice for the English Department to make as Rotary Student of the Month. She represents all that we value in the department: she appreciates subtleties in literature, as is apparent in her thoughtful participation in class discussion, the lines in her essays that stay with you long after you teach her, and in the way she has crafted her own literature as an author. “Even doomed souls dream.” This sentence hangs on my classroom wall today, the theme that Rhyleigh crafted after finishing Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men sophomore year, and a piece of wisdom that comes from someone who grasps the at once hopeful and despairing truth revealed in this heartbreaking story. Not only does Rhyleigh exemplify the kind of literary student that enrich the classroom, but she also enlivens the creative writing classroom with her passion for stories and poems and her unrelenting work ethic. She was a part of my first creative writing class when halfway through the semester, we went home to endure the pandemic lockdown. Rhyleigh was one of the students who continued to attend an optional weekly creative writing zoom meeting to share our writing pieces, critique others, and create writing together. However, haphazard, I will remember that group fondly, as they created a class poem that was cohesive and beautiful from their separate lives at home. In this poem, Rhyleigh wrote: 
It’s hard to recall a time
Of peace in the olive trees 
or bittersweet reveries.
For so long, I’ve longed
to rest, but the world does not stop spinning,
 This stanza really gives voice to the feeling that we all shared during the lockdown. I could talk for hours about my enthusiasm in honoring Rhyleigh with this award, but I will end by saying that it’s been a joy to have been able to watch Rhyleigh evolve as a student and artist over these years and she is most deserving of this honor.

Students or parents looking to buy a varsity jacket may use the link below. The store will close Oct 31, 2022 in order to get jackets in before christmas. This year we are offering two styles, the traditional heavy varsity letter jacket with leather sleeves and a button up varsity jacket made of heavy sweat shirt material. For varsity athletes who have already received their varsity letter and would like them added to the jacket, you may bring your letter to the athletic department to have it attached to your jacket.

​The past couple of weeks for Amnesty we have been covering equity in education. We highlighted the importance of equity, the issues in inequity, and how to identify underserved school communities. Some other issues covered with equity in education were the systemic issues included in the system. This includes ethnicity, poverty, and gender. We focused on removing the barriers by demanding better opportunities for students to receive affordable tutoring, after-school help, and learning resources. ​

On Friday night, Student Leaders followed up thier successful spirit week with their annual Homecoming Dance. We started the event outside under the stars but whent he raindrops fell, we quickly transitions into the commons. With free food and a GREAT DJ, fun was had by all!

This Friday concluded our fall spirit week at LOLHS sponsored by the Student Leaders. Along with the themed dress up days that they planned,  during lunches, the Student Leaders orchestrated  some fun 'spirited' activities for any and all students to participate in. On Monday was the Limbo, Tuesday - Trivia, a Spike Ball Competition was on Wednesday and Thursday ended the activities with a Donut Eating Competition. Students who participated checked in on the Wildcat App to recieve participation points and winners for each competion recieved extra bonus points. It was a fun week showing off a lot of Wildcat Pride!
