Special Olympics Winter Games took place at Powder Ridge Mountain on February 23 and 24. LOLHS's own participated in the Slalom and Giant Slalom where he placed 4th in both races. There were over 3000 athletes participating in games across the state that weekend! WAY TO GO EVAN! Students in APUSH braved the cold and ice to get a first-hand look of the Florence Griswold Museum’s new exhibit “Great Americans” by Jac Lahav. Students were able to examine the 30 life size portraits of various Americans, both living and deceased. From Washington to Lincoln to Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Jac Lahav has painted a wide variety of famous (and not so famous) Americans in ways that are both evocative and sometimes provocative. Students were able to learn from the exhibit curator Amy Kurtz Lansing, who took APUSH herself when she was in high school. Additionally, students were treated to a tour of the original Florence Griswold house, which captures what it was like in Old Lyme in 1910, when the Lyme Art Colony was at its peak. For more information about the exhibit and the Florence Griswold Museum, go to:https://florencegriswoldmuseum.org/jac-lahav/ Chemistry students were assigned the element strontium for a national timeline of the elements project. Students were to include the symbol and atomic number and then original artwork representing the element. Take a look at what Aiden Powers turned in! Way to go Aiden!
How likely are you to work for a business that has an international component?
If you were in the presentation of combined classes, International Business and Chinese, the answer was obvious - highly likely! John Wang, teacher of Chinese, presented statistics of the growing global economy and China's place in it along with an explanation of how business is conducted in China. Joanne Hedwall, teacher of International Business, pointed out the contrasts between doing business in China versus doing business in the US. Normally the two teachers have one class session but there were so many questions the students posed that they decided to meet for a second time. The group of over 40 students were able to watch power point presentations with numerous videos and ask questions about the differences in culture and conducting business. Wang and Hedwall have been combining their classes since Wang came on board in the high school. The LOLHS Science Bowl team of Ryan McTigue, Rachael Larson, Nikolai Stephens-Zumbaum and Ted Wayland competed at the Department of Energy Northeast Regional Science Bowl competition. Placed in Division E in the morning, they beat Greenwich HS B, Kingswood-Oxford HS, New Canaan HS, Waterford HS A, and Rocky Hill HS B. Based on their wins and number of points scored, the team was ranked #7 of the 35 teams in the South competition and was the smallest public school in the competition. The team entered the afternoon’s double elimination tournament against 10th ranked E. O. Smith HS B with a loss. Although answering almost the same number of tossups, the team did not answer any bonus questions and as bonus questions are worth 10 and tossups only 4, the 90-28 loss sounds a lot more lopsided that it was. Shunted into the lower bracket, LOLHS again faced New Canaan. This time New Canaan played much better but couldn’t match the Wildcats, still falling short 46-42. Advancing in the lower bracket LOLHS faced a rematch against EO Smith B. This time, although LOL led at the half, EO Smith resurged in the second half to win 56-26. Overall the Wildcats finished 6-2 on the day and 7th in a field of 35. Big individual scorer for the day was Ryan with 216 points, Rachael with 20 and followed by Nikolai with 12. All four contributed to the numerous bonus questions answered and learned some humility and a lot of science. Show Choir - AMPED UP! - scored a silver rating and a second place win at the Connecticut Classic Show Choir Festival, held Saturday at Daniel Hand High School!! Madison Babcock won a Judges Award for her solo in the song “Come Alive!” WAY TO GO WILDCATS!
By empowering Central American artists, the Pulsera Project gives artisans a sense of autonomy and economic stability in a place where consistency of any kind is hard to come by. The non-profit organization connects the artists, who make the bracelets ("pulseras" in Spanish), with students in over 2,500 schools across the United States. Although fruitful, enjoyable employment is tough to find in Central America, this connection employs nearly 200 artists that live there. The students also reap the benefits of cultural education and diversity through the purchase of these bracelets, which beautifully pay homage to the artists' heritage. For just five dollars per bracelet, anyone can both empower Central American artists and learn more about our diverse world.

Take a listen to Neil Smith's musical creation. Neil wrote:
This is my album, each and every song has a cool story to tell, but the special song on the album has to be "Butterfly". My mother loved butterflies, and when she passed away, she said she was going to come back as a butterfly. And ever since then, there have been occurrences of my friends and family getting followed around by a monarch butterfly that won't seem to go away. |
